ابن أبي الحديد أديب شاعر اشتغل بالفقه والأصول كان على التشيع فصار معتزليا جاحظيا . وتعدد علومه هي التي جعلته يقدم على شرح نهج البلاغة المنسوب إلىالإمام علي، بعد أن شرحه الراوندي مقتصرا على جهة تخصصه وهي الفقه، فشرحه ابن أبي الحديد مبينا ما فيه من بلاغة وبيان، شارحا الكلمات الغريبة عربيا، مفصلا الروايات المختلفة مصرحا بقول أصحابه المعتزلة وأحيانا إمامه الجاحظ . وقد جعل قول الإمام علي بعد كلمة الأصل وقوله بعد الشرح مستعينا فيه بكل علومه وفنونه وقد قدم للكتاب بالحكم على البغاة والخوارج، وفي الإمامة، ثم نسب الرضي أبي الحسن الموسوي جامع نهج البلاغة . وختم الكتاب بذكر 998 حكمة منسوبة لأمير المؤمنين وقد زود الكتاب بمجلد للفهارس العلمية
