الغريب له أكثر من معنى، والمراد به هنا : ما جهل غالب الناس من خرج هذا الحديث وقد جمع الشعراني هذه الأحاديث لما كثر السؤال عنها هل هي صحيحة ثابتة أولا ؟ وهل هي من كلام النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أو غيره ؟ فانتقى هذه الأحاديث الـ 2249 من الجامع الصغير وزوائده والجامع الكبير جميعها للسيوطي، وأضاف إليها جميع ما في المقاصد الحسنة للسخاوي من الأحاديث ذاكرا مخرج الحديث مقتصرا عليه عن التصريح بالصحة والضعف على منهج بينه في مقدمته
