عُني النحاة بالنظر في أواخر الكلمات وما يعتريها من إعراب وبناء ونحو ذلك، أمّا المؤلف الفاضل فقد عني بمعاني النحو، فهو يرى أنّ الأوجه النحوية ليست مجرد استكثار من تعبيرات، وإنّما لكل وجه دلالته، فإذا أردت معنى ما لزمك أن تستعمل التعبير الذي يؤدّيه، ولا يمكن أن يؤدّي تعبيران مختلفان معنى واحداً، وإنّ العدول من تعبير إلى تعبير لا بدّ أنْ يصحبه عدولٌ من معنى إلى معنى، فالأوجه التعبيرية المتعددة إنّما هي صور لأوجه معنوية متعددة.
إنّ هذا الكتاب هو محاولة في فقه النحو للتمييز بين التراكيب المختلفة وشرح معنى كلّ تركيب، وهو ما لا تجده في أغلب كتب النحو والبلاغة.
