يعتبر كتاب الموطأ من اقدم كتب السنة واصحها، ويتميز بكون جامعه اماما” مجتهدا”، وبقصر الاسانيد، وبإثبات الامام مالك لفتاويه وفتاوى السلف بعد الاحاديث، وبالبلاغات، وقد رتبه على الابواب الفقهية . وقد سمعه منه خلق كثير ومن اشهر رواياته رواية يحيى الليثي جاء فيها 1843 حديثا” عدا فتاوى الامام مالك التي طالت في هذه الرواية، والبلاغات . وقد طبع في آخر الكتاب ” اسعاف المبطأ برجال الموطأ ” للسيوطي وهو يتكلم على رجال اسانيد الامام مالك في الموطأ جرحا” وتعديلا” بحسب حروف المعجم
