Although the vast majority of mankind believe in a Creator or Supreme Being, their concepts vary. What is death? Is it total annihilation? Or is it simply the severing of the soul from the body? When the soul is separated from the body, what happens to each of them? What happens to man himself, the owner of this transient body and eternal soul? Does his consciousness come to an end when his body dies? Or does his awareness continue to live on in his eternal soul? Do the dead feel enjoyment and pain the way the living do? Can the awareness of a living man whose soul is locked in his body compare with the awareness of a dead man whose soul has been released from his body’?
Naturally the answer to this last question is, No! The living are aware and the dead are aware. But there is a difference and there is no way to compare them. Death is not pure annihilation. It is merely movement from one world to another. When the dead man feels the bliss or punishment of the grave, it does not mean that he is alive in his grave, needing food, clothes and so on. Nor does it mean that his soul permeates all the parts of his body as it did when he was in this world. The soul returns to the body again in a way which is not the same as in this world so that the dead man can be questioned and tested in the grave.

About The Author
Shaykh Abd ar-Rahman b. Nasir as-Sa’di was one of the foremost prominent scholars from the Arabian Peninsula. He was born in the city of ‘Unayzah, Saudi Arabia, in the year 1309 AH (1885 CE). He began studying Islam at an early age. He excelled in his studies to such an extant that his fellow students asked him to tutor them; thus, not only was he a student, but he was also a teacher at the same time. He studied various Islamic sciences and disciplines from some of the leading scholars of that area, as well as some famous visiting scholars. He authored many works, which are in print today. Shaykh as-Sa’di passed away in the year 1376 AH (1956 CE) at the age of 69, and was buried in the city of ‘Unayzah.

He was raised in a house of knowledge and he began his studies with his father. Then he went on to study in Damascus and from there he became a student under Ibn Taymiyyah in 712 AH. He remained with Ibn Taymiyyah until the death of his teacher in 728 AH. For those 16 years, he assisted his teacher in defending the Sunnah and was jailed with his teacher on more than one occasion.
He did not show preference towards any particular Madhab; rather he had a firm inclination towards the Sunnah, and he firmly defended the ‘Aqeedah and way of the Salafus-Saalih.
Ibnul Qayyim was a sea of knowledge, as shown by his many monumental works as well as by the students he had under his tutelage.
The Imaam wrote many books, known for touching the heart of those who read them thereby giving those who were entranced in his writings a deeper understanding of their purpose.
Some of his well known students were Imaam adh-Dhahabee, Imaam Ibn Kathir, Imaam al-Haafidh Ibn Rajiab, May Allaah bless them all.

His color started to change and he rolled up his sleeves, so we said: ‘What’s the matter, oh Prophet of Allah?’, he said: ‘Don’t you hear what I’m hearing?’ We said: ‘What is it, oh Prophet of Allah?’ He said: ‘These two men are being severely punished in their graves for a relatively minir sin.” We said: ‘For what are they punished, oh Prophet of Allah?’ He said: ‘One of them never used to clean urine from himself, and the other used to harm the people by his speech and walk amongst the people carrying tales.’
So he called for two palm stalks and he put one into each grave. We said: ‘Will this benefit them oh Messenger of Allah?’ He replied: ‘Yes, it will lighten their punishment for as long as it remains moist.'”
