Imam Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abu Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi, was born in Cordoba, Spain, at the summlt of Its great period of Islamic civilisation. He was an eminent Maliki scholar who specialised in fiqh and Hadith. The breadth and depth of his scholarship are evident in his writings. The most famous of then is his twenty-volume tasfir al Jami’ li-ahkam al-Qar’an, Imam al-Qirtubi was a man of great modesty who disdained worldly honours and throughout his life wore the simple gown and cap of the ordinary Muslin. He traveled from Spain to the East and settled in Munya Abi’l-Khusavb. in Upper Egypt. where he died in 671H/ 1273

What is death? Is it total annihilation? Or is it simply the severing of the soul from the body? When the soul is separated from the body, what happens to each of them? What happens to man himself, the owner of this transient body and eternal soul? Does his consciousness come to an end when his body dies? Or does his awareness continue to live on in his eternal soul? Do the dead feel enjoyment and pain the way the living do? Can the awareness of a living man whose soul is locked in his body compare with the awareness of a dead man whose soul has been released from his body’?
Naturally the answer to this last question is, No! The living are aware and the dead are aware. But there is a difference and there is no way to compare them. Death is not pure annihilation. It is merely movement from one world to another. When the dead man feels the bliss or punishment of the grave, it does not mean that he is alive in his grave, needing food, clothes and so on. Nor does it mean that his soul permeates all the parts of his body as it did when he was in this world. The soul returns to the body again in a way which is not the same as in this world so that the dead man can be questioned and tested in the grave.

Allah, the Most High, has praised those who possess the attribute of a heightened sense of fear Saying,
“And such (are the believers) who are humbled by the fear of their Lord…” [Al Muminun, 57]
The element of fear exists within mankind in varying degrees. When the fear of Allah is established in the hearts, it eliminates wrongdoing and attachment to worldly desires. He was raised in a house of knowledge and he began his studies with his father. Then he went on to study in Damascus and from there he became a student under Ibn Taymiyyah in 712 AH. He remained with Ibn Taymiyyah until the death of his teacher in 728 AH. For those 16 years, he assisted his teacher in defending the Sunnah and was jailed with his teacher on more than one occasion.
He did not show preference towards any particular Madhab; rather he had a firm inclination towards the Sunnah, and he firmly defended the ‘Aqeedah and way of the Salafus-Saalih.
Ibnul Qayyim was a sea of knowledge, as shown by his many monumental works as well as by the students he had under his tutelage.
The Imaam wrote many books, known for touching the heart of those who read them thereby giving those who were entranced in his writings a deeper understanding of their purpose.
Some of his well known students were Imaam adh-Dhahabee, Imaam Ibn Kathir, Imaam al-Haafidh Ibn Rajiab, May Allaah bless them all.

Anyone who has a brain will not doubt that Muslims today need the means of steadfastness more than their predecessors among the Salaf did, and that the effort required is greater, because of the corruption of out times, and the scarcity and weakness of brothers and supporters who could help. The Prophet (saw) gave an example of the heart, ‘The heart (qalb) takes its name from its constant changes (taqalluban alteration, variation, ups and downs). The likeness of heart is that a feather at the root of a tree, being turned over and over by the wind.’ As a later poet said, ‘He is only called insaan (man) because of his nasyaan (forgetfulness). And it is only al-qalb (the heart) because it constantly varies (yataqalib).’
Making the one stand firm who is tossed about by the winds of doubt and confusion is a serious matter, which needs tremendous means as benefits the seriousness and difficulty of the task at hand. It is part of Allaah’s mercy towards us that He has shown to us, in His Book and through the words and life of His Prophet (saw) many ways of being steadfast in Islaam.

Its wordings are concise while reflecting great reward, is easy to remember and pronounce possessing tangible effects on the body and soul. From such great adhkar the Prophet used to consistently make and encourage others regarding it, is the Hawqala, or the saying of ‘La Hawla wa la Quwwata illa Billah’. This remembrance has merits and virtues none but Allah fully encompasses – the meanings and implications of which, lead to certainty and solace through strengthening ones’ faith and connection with Allah.
This special dhikr is of such importance that the author (may Allah preserve him) saw the need to single it out in this short treatise, entitling it, “The Hawqala: Its meanings, virtues, and creedal implications”.
