كتاب يبجث في الأدب العربي متخصص في الشعر العربي في فترة معينة أيام الدولة الحمدانية والدولة الديلمية . يتكلم على محاسن أشعار ذلك العصر وذكر أسماء الشعراء وشيئا من شعره. ولكن الثعالبي في كتابه هذا لم يقتصر على الترجمة المحضة والاستشهاد بالنصوص الشعرية، بل نراه يورد آراء نقدية قيمة وتعليلات أدبية ممتعة تنم عن ذوق أدبي رفيع، كما يعمد في كثير من الأحيان إلى المقارنة والموازنة بين من يترجم له وبين غيره من الشعراء في الفن الشعري الذي برع فيه . وقد ألحقنا بآخر الكتاب بمجلدا خاصا تتمة يتيمة الدهر للمصنف نفسه وقد جاءت على منوال اليتيمة وعلى نفس منهجها
